DOUGLAS BYRD MIDDLE SCHOOL NAMED AS A 2017 RECIPIENT OF A LIBRARY GRANT

FROM THE LAURA BUSH FOUNDATION FOR AMERICA’S LIBRARIES

On May 23, 2017, Douglas Byrd Middle School received a $5,600 grant from The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.  More than $930,000 in grants will be distributed to 160 school libraries across the country this year for the purchase of books and reading materials. Douglas Byrd Middle was one of only eight schools in North Carolina chosen to receive this grant.

“As a former librarian, I know school libraries play an important role in improving student achievement and encouraging students to love reading.” said Mrs. Laura Bush. “With this grant, your librarian will make your library the perfect place for students to fall in love with reading.”

The librarian at DBMS, Kristy Sartain, is in her first year with Cumberland County Schools and her fourth year as a school librarian. “This year, I was able to really open up the library to students and have increased circulation over last year by more than 300%. I am lucky to have a principal, Mrs. Meshonda Williams, who is very supportive of the library and allows me to use some out-of-the-box ways to get students in here. This grant will allow me to purchase the books students are asking for, like graphic novels, mysteries, romance novels, and biographies of their favorite actors, artists, and athletes. I am a firm believer that every child can be a reader. They just need to find the right book that sparks it for them.”

Mrs. Smith, DBMS Teacher of the YearMy teaching philosophy is that every child can learn, we must only figure out how to reach them. Everyone is gifted at something. As an educator, it is my job to try and find that gift and help the child to see it. Discovering our strengths gives us the courage and fortitude to strengthen our weakness. I try to help my students see that challenges and failures are all apart of process that leads to success. In the words of Albert Einstein “You never fail until you stop trying. I have had the privilege to work at DBMS for six years. My first year was spent volunteering at the school and I discovered that some of the greatest and most talented children in Cumberland County are right here in the Douglas Byrd Community. There is greatness here! As a community, we must continue to expose and push our youth toward excellence. We have to help them see past the immediate and help them build dreams for the future. We must remind them of the great possibilities that await and the decisions they must make in order to be successful. We must support, encourage, and challenge them to be the best versions of themselves.
